Buying clothes this time of year can be tricky because some days it still feels like summer and others its beginning to feel like autumn! The temperatures are so up and down but even when its hot I don’t want to wear summer colors and styles anymore – I am ready for fall!

If you feel the same way I do, you need to add some transitional staple pieces into your wardrobe. These Madewell gingham pants transition so well from end of summer to fall. They are cropped so they have an element of summer to them but the colors and material are all fall.

To transition them I, first, added layers (and ditched the linen top). As the temperatures begin to drop start with a sweater and then add a light jacket as needed. Second, I switched out accessories and shoes. White shoes are super summery to me so I switched to a pair of tan canvas Supergas. As temperatures drop even further I would ditch the sneakers for a pair of booties. I also changed my earrings from white clover studs to tortoise shell hoops. I love shades of browns paired with tortoise shell in the fall!

3 Tips for Finding a Transitional Staple

1. Look for pieces that have elements of summer and fall.

For example, these pants are cropped but are a thicker material making them able to be worn well into fall, maybe even the beginning of winter.

2. If the piece can easily be “layered” it will transition well.

If you can easily add on layers such as sweaters and jackets you can keep wearing the transitional piece for chillier months to come.

3. Light neutrals transition well.

Although white is seen as taboo after Labor Day I still wear it through September (I know, rule breaker!) But after that I typically try to stick to creams. Cream and tan are great in early fall and you can always add darker browns and even black as the months go on. I love using tortoise shell accessories to tie all of these neutrals together.

Shop the Look

I also feel the need to note that my gingham pants are on sale! Also, J.Crew is having a 35% off sale on their fall styles with the code FALLFAVES . I really think they have the best sweaters.

Happy fall shopping and happy Friday! Thanks for reading and I hope you have a wonderful weekend with some crisp fall air.
