Three Nantucket Lighthouses and What They Mean to Me

For as long as I can remember I have been drawn to lighthouses, specifically on Nantucket. Not only are they beautiful structures, they serve a significance to me personally. Obviously, lighthouses are supposed to help navigate ships through rough seas. In a more metaphorical sense, however, they remind me of Matthew 5:13-14 – “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world…” They serve as a reminder to me of God’s light.

Each lighthouse on Nantucket means something to me and is beautifully unique. If you ever go to Nantucket you need make sure to see all of them!

1. Sankaty Lighthouse

Sankaty Lighthouse sits out in ‘Sconset between the ocean and the beautiful iconic Sankaty Golf Club. This lighthouse makes me think of early morning walks with my family and Moby, strolling through the quaint village of ‘Sconset gushing over the immaculate homes and precious little cottages.

If you want to know more on what to do in ‘Sconset, you can read this post I wrote on it a couple months ago!

2. Great Point Lighthouse

Great Point Lighthouse is the most “beachy” lighthouse Nantucket has to offer. It the hardest to get to, because you have to purchase an over-sand vehicle permit and then drive a couple miles down the beach to get to it. But let me tell you, it is worth it. Great Point is a surreal part of the island that most tourists skip over because of its “far-out” location.

This lighthouse brings me back to long summer beach days with my family and lots of peace and quiet.

3. Brant Point Lighthouse

Finally, the most iconic of them all, Brant Point lighthouse. Brant Point is also one of the, arguably, most beautiful places on island. As you look out you can see the sound, the harbor, all the boats on their mooring balls, and into town.

During the summer there is always a huge American flag along the side of the lighthouse and during Christmas there is a huge wreath along the side! It is so gorgeous.

Did you know it is good luck to throw a penny off the ferry when you pass Brant Point lighthouse leaving Nantucket? I’ve done it at the end of every single summer. This lighthouse is always the lasting image when you leave Nantucket and it makes me so nostalgic!

My family had photos taken here and I will forever cherish them (which I will share more on later, if you’re interested.) I linked below all of my sister’s dresses.
