If you’re remotely interested in fashion you likely know who Danielle Bernstein of WeWoreWhat is. And if you don’t, you need to read this book ASAP. Danielle Bernstein is one powerhouse of a woman and entrepreneur. I truly look to her as one of my role models – especially after reading her book, This is Not a Fashion Story. If you’re a female who has any interest in fashion or entrepreneurship in general – you have to read this book.
Obviously, I am very interested in the influencer and fashion industry. Something that always concerns me about mega-influencers is how authentic they are. Sure, everyone edits their pictures from time to time on Instagram. But some accounts on instagram with millions of followers live out a lie! This is Not a Fashion Story is 234 pages of authenticity.
She tells the story of a real girl who grew up on Long Island and was given an old sewing machine for Hanukah and would run to her local mall for searching for the perfect outfits for her Friday night parties in high school. She tells the story of a real girl who goes to luxurious socialite events and fashion weeks. Most importantly, she tells the story of the bridge between those two stories and how she became the woman she is today. It takes hard work and grit – running across Manhattan with samples and steaming many racks of clothing.
This book was a really good reminder to me that Instagram is not an accurate reflection of real life. Shots of girls in city streets in head to toe designer may seem extremely glamorous at first glance but who knows that girl could be changing outfits in her car and everything she’s wearing could be borrowed or gifted. And sometimes you just don’t know!
Sometimes it seems like girls on Instagram, whether they’re involved in fashion or not, are just handed everything. But in reality, a lot of work has gone into their lives, they just might not be showing it because maybe it doesn’t fit the image they’re trying to portray. Regardless, Danielle Bernstein tells it how it really is in This is Not a Fashion Story.
Inspiring. Funny. Emotional. This book tells the story of a true American dream. You should probably order yourself a copy right now. 🙂
